Mail Me A Letter
My mom and I used to pass each other notes – unexpected hellos to offer a little lift in the day. On a simple folded piece of paper, tucked away in a sack lunch or nestled between the pillows of a freshly made bed, held a written reminder that someone was thinking about me.
Everyone loves receiving mail and good mail is few and far between. Personalized, hand written notes can be used to celebrate events, holidays or to help solidify professional relationships. But, the best time to send a card is when there is no occasion.
As texts, emails, tweets and status updates flood our every day, it’s nice to come upon something a little less expected. The truth is, the unexpected will always be valued over the ordinary. And the gratification of opening an envelope, holding a message in your hands, feeling the tooth of the paper and seeing the character of the handwriting is lost in digital communication.
Finding a letter in your mailbox or a card on your pillow, can change your outlook on the day in just a few words. So, make it a point to write a few personal notes each month. Drop a letter in the mail to a relative or a friend just to say hello. Slip a message under a pillow, in a cabinet or coat pocket to delight your unsuspecting recipient.
Even with little to say, a card delivers the message that you were thinking about someone. In fact, many of my notes say just that. “I was thinking about you today.” Scribble your message on a Post It note, as my mom often did, or create your own hand made cards to further personalize the gesture. I guarantee, the recipient of your kind words will appreciate it.
Send us your stories or photos of the hand made crafts you’ve created.

Here is a great story that I found today about a girl who was pen pals with John Hughes (the director) for a number of years:

When I was a little girl, my dad would create and send letters to me while away at Girl Scout camp. One letter, I remember vividly, was one crafted entirely through the Sunday comics. His message to me came via Blondie of Little Lulu and when the comics didn’t give him just what he wanted, he’d draw and write his own speech bubble. Later, when I got my first car, he made a book about my new car called Janice’s Little Red Rod which told the saga from beginning to end. My dad is gone now and I have many precious memories and mementos- those are just two!

Thanks Janice. Fantastic memories! Your father sounds very much like my parents – any excuse to be creative was eagerly grabbed. Do you still have either of these examples? We’d love to see them.
